Their Story – Frank & Michelle Heyward
In December 1997 Frank Heyward, an Aussie from South Australia, went to Uganda for an eight day holiday. During that time the Lord spoke to him about returning to Uganda as a missionary. The word was confirmed by his Pastor and others, but most importantly his wife Michele, who also received a direct word from the Lord about going to Uganda.
“Go into all the world and preach the Good News to all creation.” Mark 16:15
Becoming missionaries was something they had never discussed, or even thought of, but the Lord is a God of the miraculous. By November 1998 they had moved to Uganda with their youngest daughter, Hannah (who now lives in Australia). Upon arriving, they had made arrangements to work with a local pastor for one year, with a plan to build a church, a pastors training centre, and to do some bible teaching. Unfortunately, things did not work out as planned, and the Heywards parted company with the Ugandan pastor, but persevered and remained in Uganda to continue their missionary work.
Over the next several years the Lord gave the Heywards the vision for the work of COME, and He opened many doors for preaching, and the teaching of His word. They were invited to be involved with a church in the slum area of Kasubi, near Kampala which they accepted, and were based there for two years. In September 2001 a property was purchased at Lugala, 6 kilometres from Kampala (the Capital of Uganda) where they established the COME base. The projects now include churches, 4 nursery schools, 4 primary schools, Hospital Care at Mulago Hospital, HOPE Medical Centre and adult education.
Frank is an ordained pastor with the Australian Christian Churches (AOG Australia). Frank and Michele are associate members of ACC World Missions. Their work in Uganda has been a journey of selfless passion for a people less fortunate. Their work is nothing less than astounding, as Christ’s miracle working power is seen daily in their life of sacrifice and love for the people of Uganda.
